How to Buy Research-Grade 2-Deoxy-D-Glucose

Why 2-DG is so hard to find at genuine research grade — and what to look for.

2-Deoxy-D-Glucose is genuinely difficult to source at research grade. Unlike sodium DCA — which is produced by dozens of manufacturers — 2-DG has a much smaller market, fewer producers, and significant quality variation.

The key quality requirements for 2-DG differ slightly from DCA. HPLC purity should be ≥98%, ideally ≥99%. Crucially, optical rotation must be confirmed — 2-DG must be the D-form (dextrorotatory), not the L-form or a racemic mixture. Without optical rotation confirmation, you cannot verify you have the correct stereoisomer.

An independent third-party COA is essential. Heavy metals panel, residual solvents, and water content should all be included. Unlike DCA, MCA contamination is not a concern for 2-DG — the impurity profile is different. The main concerns are related stereoisomers, residual synthesis solvents, and heavy metal contamination from manufacturing equipment.

Most legitimate 2-DG is produced in China or India by specialty chemical manufacturers. University-grade suppliers like Sigma-Aldrich carry it but at prohibitive prices for research quantities. The key is finding a manufacturer with proper analytical equipment and willingness to provide batch-specific documentation.
